National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) says it has confiscated and destroyed counterfeit drugs and foods worth N27billion in the last five years in parts of the country.
Director General of the Agency, Dr. Paul Orhii disclosed this in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, while addressing over 250 undergraduates and beneficiaries of the Dr. Paul Orhii Scholarship Award Scheme for Benue Indigenes.
Orhii who noted that the Agency would not lent in its onerous task of ensuring quality in drugs and foods in the country said NAFDAC had taken the fight against drugs and food fakers to a different level despite the daring and adventurous stance of illicit traders of foods and drugs in the country.
The NAFDAC boss who posited that the people in the evil trade were worse than armed robbers and don’t deserve to live among sane humans stressed that drugs and food fakers lack values and have no values for human lives.
“In spite of their ungodly activities, we have introduced several cutting edge technologies in our onslaught against the trade, and today, we can proudly boast that over 80 million drugs users in Nigeria can authenticate the potency and genuineness of the drugs and food they consume.”
He however advised the students to eschew social vices and enjoined them to resist the temptation of being influenced by those he described as the masterminds of evil trade in the country, explaining that he initiated the scholarship scheme to aid the students and their parents defray the cost of acquiring university education.
“This award will undoubtedly help offset some of your expenses in school. My plea is that you all endeavor to study hard and be good citizens because it was through same effort that I am where I am today despite coming from one of the poorest families in my community.”
Earlier in a remark, Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS), Comrade Royce Ochai commended the NAFDAC DG for the gesture pointing out that Nigerian students were proud to identify with his the philanthropy and achievements since he assumed the leadership of Agency and urged other Nigerians to emulate him.
